    Is Your Niche Clergy Taxes?

Is your niche Clergy Taxes? If so, I may have a recommendation for you. And/or I may have some payroll questions for you.

I'm an assistant treasurer in my Episcopal parish. Our part-time priest is adding another part-time job at a nearby parish and is concerned about them getting her payroll correct. (Years ago our Diocese pushed us all to go to Paychex, because they worked with them to get clergy taxes right. Unfortunately, we found out the hard way that our Paychex rep did NOT get clergy taxes right. Our treasurer and senior warden have been on top of it ever since.)

Our current priest is also a good friend, and is afraid their personal accountant "doesn't get it." Her hubby is in finance, so does get it. They may be shopping for a new tax preparer before next season.

While I am pretty knowledgeable about clergy taxes, I don't currently have any clergy clients so I am not confident enough for things "off the top of my head" (I would need to research to verify things).

However, there is an extremely active Moderator in Facebook group that I belong to, and he specializes in clergy taxes. If you don't get any responses here, let me know and I'll look up his information for you. Or you can join the "Tax Professionals of America" Facebook group and most a post (I'm sure he'll respond fairly quickly; I think there are also a couple of others in that group that specialize in clergy).

Thank you for the leads, Bill.

I've taken some classes in clergy taxes, such as at HRB; and our Diocese brought out an expert from CA to give workshops to treasurers and clergy. But those were decades ago. I also don't have any clergy clients, and I no longer do payroll at our church. (I'm kinda A/R and contribute the lay pension amounts to Fidelity and some other odd jobs, but we have an elected treasurer who reports to the Vestry and have a volunteer bookkeeper.)
