    Stock sale to invest in 401K

    If you sell stock will you have to report the gain if you are using the funds to invest in a 401K plan?

      Can you give a little more info?

      If say you are selling your company stock to reinvest in a 401k plan then yes you would have to recognize a gain or loss. Unless the stock is already inside the 401k then you would not , it would be a reallocation of the portfolio.
