    MA and PA 2023 W2s

Married husband lives in MA. Works for a PA company from home as an engineer. Never worked in PA. The company changed payroll to ADP mid-year 2023. Apparently when ADP started doing the payroll, they coded the client’s working state as PA not MA. The couple didn’t realize until they came to me with their W2’s in March 2024 that they had a W2 for MA and also for PA. There were taxes withheld from MA and PA for income taxes and also local taxes for about 6 months for each state.

Someone has been working with the client to get corrected W2’s to show just MA wages and deductions. However, after looking at the changes they are making, I don’t think the way they are handling is going to work. I know this could be fixed if 2023 wasn’t over. However, seeing there were withholdings by PA, I don’t see how any withholding correction could be made for 2023. I am hoping someone here can shed some light and suggestions on this for me.
I have done the extensions for the federal and the state of MA. I did not do an extension for PA thinking the problem could be fixed so there would be no need to do a PA return. I don’t think so, but is it possible to do an extension for PA now?

Any thoughts on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Telacommuting is always a "place of work" issue, state by state.

Very much state by state. Some East Coast states use Convenience of the Employer instead of Place of Work. Read the requirements for each state.

Thanks for the responses. The issue is almost solved. The W2 for MA is being corrected to include all the wages and a W2C being issued. The company will be issuing a W2C for PA zeroing out all wages and taxes. There was no extension done for PA. My question is: If this happens, how does PA know of this correction if no return is submitted. Or doesn't it matter seeing the final result is -0-. Thanks again for your response!!

The corrected W2 should be submitted to PA by ADP. A PA return isn't required to be filed.
