I am Ultra Tax user, but based on ratings I think Drake is the best choice for dollar value.

Look at the annual surveys by trade publications such as NATP, CPA Practice Advisor, etc. Don't skimp on your tax prep software. Next to your knowledge, it's your best tool. Only you know how you work best, so demo everything out there to find the ones that work the way you work, will still work 5-10 years from now, will work for your current and prospective clients. Then put the sales reps to work to get you the best price for your practice. Make an informed decision.

One topic of discussion that's come up on the Drake board is whether or not you'll be able to use the TTB Tax Library if not purchased through Drake, but purchased directly from TTB.
I have already renewed TTB for next year - the Jacob Special. But I don't use the library directly from the Drake program although I do see the link available for the research.

I just contacted Drake renewal people and was advised that it is NOT a requirement that you purchase TTB through Drake. You are still able to use Drake
purchasing the TTB directly from TTB.

"Looking for a cheaper but reliable tax software."

While we're at it, can anyone recommend:

            * good security that is also convenient
            * high investment return at low risk
            * food that is less filling but still tastes great
            * mega income like Jeff Bezos or Peter Thiel but almost no tax (oh wait, we already have that)

              Too Funny RR.
I think I just found a replacement for Drake.
The last few days I have been previewing OLTPRO.
The introductory price is 75% cheaper than Drake and it also uses the same Banks
              Any OLTPRO users out there?
              Thanks

With anything, you get what you pay for. I have never heard of that software before.

Usually higher prices, big named software, you can expect low wait times for help. Quick fix times for software issues. Will it even import your 2022 data??

My guess is No-one here is going to have heard of this or used.

Last thing to ponder, divide clients by software fees and increase your fees if necessary.

We process a bit over 700 clients each year. The software is actually one of the smaller costs in the big picture (Mortgage, Utilities, Taxes, Advertising -> which is usually more than the software, etc)

For example, Brian, if you're like Spanel with 700 clients: increase your base fee by $10 and you'll have an extra $7,000 to buy new software or renew your old or upgrade. If that's not enough to use the software you like (I don't have 700 clients, for instance) increase your entity returns by $25. Increase some complex issues, maybe K-1s or any thing that requires that due diligence Form 8867 by $10. You get the idea. Skimp on other office supplies but your tax prep software is your greatest tool after your own knowledge/education. Use the software you want to use.

Sure looks to me like a real good deal(Drake), as noted in the last few years of the Journal's September issue. Software is going up,up up in price, not a lot of competition, and dummies like me who have been scaling back and probably could get better pricing even from Ultra if I took the time!!! Also really, really old guys do not like change!!! There has been way too much change going on - that it is probably necessary!!
