    2019 due date

What is the official due date for a 2019 return with a refund? I have read July 15, 2023 and April 15, 2023 and October 15, 2023. I am lost at this point. I think April 18, 2023.

If an extension was filed, October.

If no extension, then not October. I'm not quite sure, but TurboTax says July.

Did we have an extension of time to file to July during the pandemic? It was July one year. Was that for 2019?

Yes, 2019 tax year's due date was 7/15/20. So your 3 years is going to run from that date. Longer, of course, if you put your client on extension to October 15.

There are two issues here. First what is the period to timely file a refund claim and second, if the claim is timely, how much of a refund can you get.

Section 6511(a) allows three years from the July 15, 2020 due date, which gives a taxpayer until July 15, 2023 to file a timely claim. But section 6511(b) states that the taxpayer is limited to the amount which was paid in the three year period immediately proceeding the claim for refund. Since payroll taxes for 2019 were deemed paid on April 15, 2020, that creates a bit of a problem for a taxpayer.

BUT, IRS comes to the rescue via Notice 2023-21. You should read it.

As other posters have said, an extension is different but your post doesn't suggest that.
