Client is a former California resident, has moved to another state in 2018. He had no California income in 2022. Employer, who is in California, mistakenly withheld 2000 for CA taxes. How to get the 2000 refunded. I've looked at the CANR and can't seem to zero in on a way for refund. Maybe an apportioned return? I tried using zero in the state box 16 of W-2, Didn't work. I am not (clearly) a California tax preparer, although from time to time I do a CA return for a client who may have done some work there. Any help is appreciated!

Question for California pros?

There will still be problems if the the W-2 shows CA state wages, it might require a corrected W-2. But as for the tax return, the mechanics work like this:
In Col A of Schedule CA(540NR) you show the federal amounts. There probably will not be any California tax law adjustments in cols B & C, so Col D just duplicates Col A. Then finally, in Col E, you show that the CA source wages are zero. (as well as all the other amounts). The mistake many people make is using Cols B & C to show income that is not CA source, that is incorrect."You said it, they'll never know the difference.
