    I.D. Theft

Just got a call from a tax prep customer. He said his house had been broken into by thieves yesterday while he was out.
He said a portable safe had been taken, containing birth certificates, social security cards & other personal docs.
Steps have been taken to mitigate I.D. theft with his bank, investments and he has frozen his credit but I'm wondering,
just to be proactive, if he should be notifying the IRS about this?

The IRS has a whole page/area about ID theft with lots of good information: https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/taxpaye...identity-theft
And, as always, the IRS has a form for that.
Also, tell your client to check the FTC website: https://consumer.ftc.gov/features/identity-theft
    Police report.

Just have them get the IP PIN from the IRS, you can apply and get it online (new ones are issued for the calendar year in early January). No need to "report" any ID theft to IRS unless he thinks a false tax return has already been filed (not likely in mid-December when efiling is shut down).

It's kind of sad that more people aren't already using the IP PIN for their filings.
