My new client's husband passed away late last year. He was a pastor and took care of all the financial aspects of their life. The prior preparer marked the return, so no self-employment taxes were owed but doesn't think they ever filed the exemption 4361 form. Here I am doing the return this year and it's adding the self-employment tax piece. I highly doubt the wife is going to know what I'm taking about with the exemption form. Any thoughts on the best way to handle this is? Is there a way to see if the form was filed in the past with the IRS?
