2.3 million unopened returns from 2020?

Wondering if anyone has run across any new information on the 2.3 million unopened mailings from 2020 the IRS hasn't gotten around to yet?
I have a client that paper filed a 1040 with two W-7s, and I think he is among the 2.3. I'm glad that isn't in my "black hole" file!
That being said, I think IRS did a great job considering Covid, the additional work of getting all those stim checks out and not to mention the ACTC!
    So, any rumors out there?

If you consider shredding 30 million information returns instead of processing them a great job, then yes the irs did a great job.

If you consider taking 10 months to answer mail, then yes, the irs did a great job.

All kidding aside, I hope Congress restores the funding so that they can hire enough staff to start processing on a timely basis. Enough of this BS! This can't become a third world country!

I have clients whose paper-filed returns in Sept 2020 (w/extensions originally filed in March) were not processed until July 2021. Assessed penalties for late filing, there has been correspondence pending since then requesting abatement. Sept 2021 got letter asking for 90 more days to consider; Dec got letter asking for 90 more days to consider; March 2022 got letter asking for 90 more days to consider. I fully expect to get another one in June. How long can this go on? Any suggestions for best source to contact?
