    Deceased Recipient

One of my contractor clients waits until year end before scurrying around to get SS# for issuing 1099s.

One of his new subcontractors died of covid. Should he issue a 1099 with a blank SS#? I don't think the IRS is going to bother the recipient, but they may bother the issuer...

I have in the past prepared 1099-Misc without SS# and paper filed them. Also just to make sure please document the issue of Backup withholding when SS# is not provided. If it is over $600 there is a good chance IRS will send a tax notice eventually.
