If you have already filed your 2020 Form 1040 or 1040-SR, there is no need to file an amended return (Form 1040-X) to figure the amount of unemployment compensation to exclude. The IRS will refigure your taxes using the excluded unemployment compensation amount and adjust your account accordingly. The IRS will send any refund amount directly to you.

Gene, Thanks a lot for that link. I was waiting to see if the IRS will automatically send the refund directly to my clients for returns already filed. Made my day!!! Now just waiting to see if MA will change their rules on taxable unemployment before finishing unfiled returns.

Unless my browser is stuck with the 'old' information, today's update (the 24th) does not say that. It shows:

you should not file an amended return at this time. The IRS will issue additional guidance as soon as possible.

Definitely, not the same as was printed yesterday???? I have a hard copy of
what was printed yesterday. I guess we'll just keep waiting for more information.

It seems to be a moving target. I'll email you the "yesterday" version. <smh> What a fun tax season!
