    Business Use of Home

Client works 30 hours per week from home as and 10 hours per week in the building as a teacher. Is an employee; received a w-2. Client started work during shutdown. Does not have an office or a desk in employer's building. Situation sort of evolved due to Covid. Uses one room regularly and exclusively for the 30 hours per week of work. Client does not rent room from employer. Is there any way to deduct business use of home expenses in this situation? Thank you.

Some states allow employee business expenses. Federal Schedule A may have a state dedicated section input for employee business expenses to be entered. NYS does allow.

        Employee Business Use of Home

For tax years 2018 through 2025, the business use of home deduction for employees is not allowed due to the suspension of the deduction for miscellaneous itemized deductions subject to the 2% AGI limit on
Schedule A (Form 1040), Itemized Deductions.

As does California, so right there you have at least about 20% of the country eligible for a state tax deduction.

Just an added note.. In addition to employee business expenses, the state deduction also applies to the old 2% misc. section of schedule A.
