    2019 tax forms

Just downloaded 2019 tax software from Taxwise.
Kinda comforting to see that the 1040 appears to be something like the old format.

The two half page 1040 form was a "stupid" idea just to keep a political promise to reduce the form to a "post card" size. I think politicians should be held accountable when they come up with a half baked idea like that.

Just to be clear, it wasn't Congress that came up with the half baked idea here.

Though approved in the “Tax Cuts and Jobs Act” by Congress!

Does it really matter who came up with this half-baked idea? It was implemented by the Govt. and we had to deal with it last year. Hopefully going forward there will be more public comment and IRS looks at it from a practical perspective.

First you complain about something by calling it "half baked" and "stupid", and then you object when someone takes your complaint seriously. If there is a problem (again, YOUR opinion) then of course it matters to determine the source of the problem in order to fix it. It is clear they were not the least bit interested in any comment or feedback from the tax professional community, nor the actual taxpayers.

To paraphrase one of your own frequent questions on this board, can you provide a cite for that? I think you'll find that unlike for example Form 1040-SR for seniors, the "postcard" format was never mandated by any law, certainly not the TCJA. It was purely a product of the current administration's Treasury department (not specifically the IRS).

Think you “rapidly” read the two reply posts which resulted in you misunderstanding the posts, especially to ATSMAN’s reply post. So not to get into your usual long winded contest replies, it is easier to say you are correct as your posts always tells so not to get another reply.

thanks for the education. (Again, Congress is involved in passing tax law)

No one can argue Congress passes the tax laws but there is also no argument that the "postcard" was created by statute - it wasn't.

Washington— Delivering on the promise to simplify taxes for the American people, the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) today announced that Americans will be able to fill out their individual income tax returns on a single postcard-size form for the 2019 tax season.   The 2018 IRS Form 1040 will replace the current Form 1040, as well as the Form 1040A and the Form 1040EZ.  The IRS circulated a copy of the new form and will work with the tax community to finalize the streamlined Form 1040 over the summer.   “As part of the historic Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, this Administration committed to making taxes simple and fair for American families. We are delivering on this promise,” said Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin. “The new, postcard-size Form1040 is designed to simplify and expedite filing tax returns, providing much-needed relief to hardworking taxpayers.”   This simplified Form 1040 will streamline tax returns so that all 150 million taxpayers can use the same form. The new form consolidates the three versions of the 1040 into one simple form. The IRS will still obtain the information from each taxpayer needed to determine their tax liability or refund.  ###

Never said it was. As from what you referenced in part “As part of the historic Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, this Administration committed to making taxes simple and fair for American families”......”. .....”The IRS circulated a copy of the new form and will work with the tax community to finalize the streamlined Form 1040 over the summer.....”. The reference does not state who “designed” the postcard or if created by statue or not.

But who and how is responsible? At this point it is a non-issue.

Again, Tax Cuts and Jobs Act passed by Congress was the point of a complete package whether tax reporting and/or collecting by a “postcard”, non-postcard forms, etc.

Thanks for the reference of both.

Paul Ryan and the GOP were pushing the mirage of a post card return long before the 2017 bill.

I would like to know the "statue" that created the post card return.

Agree. The question is - if there is one? Just asking who may know factually and not a guess.

What does your tax history show? If there was ever a statue to give the IRS authority to design the tax forms (if it is the IRS who designs the forms) ? If it is the IRS, did the IRS give itself the authority or maybe Congress?

                          Reading the reference by NYEA:
in part “As part of the historic Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, this Administration committed to making taxes simple and fair for American families”......”. .....”The IRS circulated a copy of the new form and will work with the tax community to finalize the streamlined Form 1040 over the summer.....”. The question remains - who designed and who is responsible for approving the tax form(s)? At this point it is a non-issue but now it is generating many reply posts even one with a picture. One reply post mentions “Paul Ryan and the GOP were pushing the mirage of a post card return long before the 2017 bill”, but does not say if they designed and approved it.

So can one say the prior political Administration, maybe, is the one who designed and is responsible for approving the form(s) for The Affordable Care Act (ACA) requiring Form 1095-A, Form 1095-B, Form 1095-C, and Form 8962 to accommodate the Act?

Again, Tax Cuts and Jobs Act passed by Congress was the point of a complete package whether tax reporting and/or collecting by a “postcard”, non-postcard forms, etc.

Whether it was Congress or the Administration doesn't matter. It was done purely for political purposes,
