    ACA penalty for MFS

    Client has W2 income of $5,000 and did not have health insurance coverage for 2018. Will file as Married Filing Separately for 2018. Based on my research and my work to this point, it appears that the client is responsible for health insurance and will pay a shared responsibility payment of $695 with the tax return filing. My understanding is that even with minimal income, the taxpayer is still responsible if filing status is MFS. Looking for confirmation or comment...

    That is correct. The filing threshold for MFS is 0.

      It certainly seems like the "not affordable" exemption would apply.
