Is the K-12 deduction/Credit allowed if no funds come from a 529 or ESA account? If you just pay Tuition for child, can you claim the credit or expense? If so, on Form 8917 or Tuition expense?

Although the question was poorly worded, I think it's clear that the OP is referring to the new provision to allow up to $10K annually in tax free distributions from a 529 plan for K-12 tuition. (Interestingly, I think this is a permanent change, not just for eight years like most non-corporate TCJA provisions). Not all states conformed. And the answer is no, there is no deduction or credit for K-12 tuition paid other than by distribution from a 529 QTP. (or Coverdell, but who uses those anymore?)Last edited by Rapid Robert; 05-06-2019, 10:07 AM."You said it, they'll never know the difference. Come on, we'll paint our way out!" - Moe Howard
