    Mfj return - death of spouse 2019

    What is the procedure to file MFJ when the spouse dies in 2019 before the 2018 return is filed.

      Just enter date of death and file like you normally would. My software will filling "Filing as Surviving Spouse".

          Jiggers is correct. The surviving spouse signs the 8879 and any state form for e-file. I am assuming they had a joint bank account so refund deposit should not be an issue.

          You may want to give a heads up to the surviving spouse that the 2019 tax return can be filed as MFJ also.
