    Tax Return for a minor

A 16 year old is claimed as a dependent on her parents tax return. She has earned income of $1958 and received a W-2. There is no fed or state tax withheld. Does she need to file a tax return?

Not federal. Possibly state depending on state filing requirments.

Does the $1958 income need to be added to the parents return?

Not sure what you mean by the tax preparers return. Is there a pub I should check? Thanks for your time.

The one titled Dependents, Standard Deduction, and Filing Information would seem like a logical choice.

Gee Chris. Didn't mean to hurt your feelings. Believe it or not some of us are not full time tax preparers, and I wasnt aware that it was a requirement. I saved my pennies for a long time to afford the book. Hope you can get over it.

Fair enough. I am not a paid tax preparer. My question was legitimate or I would not have asked it. Don't want to take crap from Chris.

But, please make use of your copy of The Tax Book. It will supply you with the basics. And, we have great senses of humor; it's how we make it through tax season each year!

I honestly never knew this forum was also for NON paid preparers. Maybe others the same way??

Who buys Thetaxbook $60-$100 for preparing their own return only???

                              I suppose a few.
