Couple filed single when they should of filed Married Filing Jointly

Couple filed their 2016 taxes as single when they should have filed Married Filing Jointly.
Do I enter the information as Single and then add the information for MFJ for the amendment?
    Thanks,
    Marion

You need two amend two returns.

1st return needs to be amended to zero, paying all refunds back or asking for any money paid in.
2nd return needs to be amended from single to MFJ.

If going from incorrect S to MFJ: Amend one. Add the other to it. Use the correct filing status. Report any refunds/balances paid from both.

One amended return contains two SSNs, so both incorrect returns are amended.

If going to MFS, that's a different process.
