    I am doing return regarding the American Opportunity Credit... if the student lives at home and commutes to school, can you deduct mileage back and forth to school as a nonqualified expense when it come to taking the American Opportunity Credit?

    Non qualified?

    For AOC you only care about Qualified Expenses and travel is not qualified.
    If your issue is expenses for a 529 plan travel does not count for that either.
