    Social security return

50 year old client with cancer. During 2017, she received $26,000 in ss benefits. For 4 months she was in remission and returned to work. Ss informed her that she owes back $9,000 in benefit payments made during 2017. She paid this back with a bank check dated january 3, 2018. How should i handle the repayment ? Thanks,

The payment was made in 2018 so the 1099-SSA for 2018 will show the $9000 benefit paid back and box 5 will be net of this #.

If she is not getting any more SS in 2018, then it is a complex calculation. I remember doing one years back and I think the IRS Pub does provide some guidance.
