We are having a disagreement in our office. If you look at 2016 Ohio Instructions for unreimbursed health care expense worksheet and compare it to the 2017 version, there have been some changes.
When I read the instructions for 2017, I interpret it to mean: if you participate in a subsidized health care plan (like medicare), you can no longer take a deduction for those medical premiums.
We use DRAKE, and when you enter medicare premiums in the SSA screen, those premium dollars do not carry-over to the Ohio medical worksheet. I know we should not rely on our software to be correct 100% of the time, but I would think if the medicare premiums were deductible for 2017, DRAKE would have those "flow" to the correct line on the Ohio medical worksheet. In previous years, medicare premiums entered on the SSA screen would "flow" to the correct line on the Ohio unreimbursed medical expense worksheet.
However, others in our office think this is not correct and that we should directly enter those medicare premiums on the Ohio screen as "other unreimbursed medical expenses."
Does anyone know if Ohio changed whether or not you can deduct medicare premiums or other post-tax subsidized medical insurance premiums? Has any one else noticed this change?
