Scenerio: client insists they can deduct gas put in motor homes they are delivering, as well as mileage on their car they are towing behind the motor home AND the mileage to drive back home in their car. I say no way - double dipping, but they want 'something in writing' that says they can't do that. This return is just asking for an audit with an enormous Schedule C loss. Suggestions?
RV Transport and mileage deduction - both ways? PLUS RV/motor home gas??

Actually, it appears that the odometer of some vehicles increases even while being towed. So, there MAY be some justification for some kind of deduction. If you want to prepare the return, you might want to see if you can find if this was ever addressed in a court case.Comment

I have a brother -in-law that does deliveries and I am sure he deducts both. They receive an exact allowance for gas use-on a card, and believe me the car gets used and repaired often. I have never had to or wanted to do his return, but he was told before he started that the refunds were from the tax returns -wife works- was a huge reason for doing it. XMAS does come twice a year for them, the second one is from refunds. He does 100,000 miles a year.Comment
