8 out of 10 lotto winners go bankrupt within 5 years of winning.

Ooops, was that too much of a buzzkill?

      The millionaire.

      >>>WOW. I just won $1,000,000.<<<

      BUT...have you paid your taxes?

P.S. Note to jainen: If I don't survive your rebuttal to my last post, how about ending all of your subsequent posts with a link like that of Aman762's above -- i.e., "If you don't want to see us anymore click here."

        There is no rebuttal

        >>If I don't survive your rebuttal to my last post<<

There is no rebuttal. You seem to understand what I said, which I appreciate, but don't agree with it, which I also appreciate. I have nothing new to bring to the discussion, so rather than repeat myself I'll just draw up my conclusion.

I think it a curious irony that this discussion should so well illustrate the point the student was making about Achebe's theme. She's probably not a very good writer in terms of grammar but she has an intuitive sense of how language flows. By lucky chance this particular theme fits her limited style well.

          Okay; fair enough

At the end of the day, we both got in some licks.

Funny though; I was just looking at a couple of lines you pointed out --

"Achebe saw ignorant and did not like it."

"Everybody had some type of ignorant come past there way but how did you dell with it."

Strangely enough, there is a kind of fluid forceful power to those blunt and illiterate statements, i.e., he recognized all the ills of the world and was repulsed by them. Then: everyone encounters evil -- the burning question is; what do I do about it?

I haven't read Achebe either but, as a sprig of the olive branch and a nod of respect to your literate and spirited defense of his "fan," I'll see if I can round up a copy and see what's afoot with the dirty, rotten, low-down inexcrupulous Marxists. If he's out of print, I'll switch to Groucho. I'll keep you posted.

Please don't take my semi-concession as a leftist epiphany. I'll have to be awfully "bad" conscience-stricken before I give up meat, carry a placard, or vote for Hillary. I don't want to nuke the whales either, but I'm in there -- tropefully speaking -- somewhere.
