    Is this deductible medical expenses?

    Taxpayer's wife has Alzheimer. He has long term care insurance. He hired care taker to his house, paid care taker wages. Long term care insurer reimburse him for part of the expenses. The part not reimbursed by long term care ins, is it deductible medical expenses?

      My opinion

      If the LTHC policy kicked in, I think that is sufficient to say the care paid for by the family qualifies for a medical deduction.

        Did he pay the premiums for the LTC insurance?
        Believe nothing you have not personally researched and verified.

          It does not matter who paid the premium!! He can still claim the portion that was not reimbursed by the health insurance company. That portion can be claimed as a medical expense subject to the 10% of income reduction. Also, he will need to have enough deductions to use Schedule A.
