Steve, there have been several posts pointing you to consider the actually CA is his tax home. Somehow I think this is something you do not want to consider.

. . .and that his current "work" in MA might now well be the "temporary assignment."

Yup, my vote is his tax home ("where you work") is CA. I'm sure those tax folks in CA will also see it that way!

I am considering it. That's why I'm asking questions. Reading an IRS publication is one thing and getting feedback from those who've seen this situation is another. That's why I asked. My responses have been to clarify what others asked in their responses not to indicate my rigidity of mindset. I appreciate the help.
