Is he on active duty or reserves and living at home?
    What month did he join?
Does he meet the test for qualifying relative? I doubt it . . .

also is the online college he is attending acredited? Does he attend the required amount of time? Who is paying the tuition?
Believe nothing you have not personally researched and verified.

        NO exemption

I don't see son being a qualifying child or a qualifying relative, although more facts might help if there are unusual circumstances in play.

For starters, he is in the military ("employed by" and active duty assumed) for a four-year commitment. He obviously is not "going to college" other than what he can accomplish in his non-military time, and forget about any "full-time student" considerations.

While an E-1 will not get rich in the military, within only a few months the gross income test will certainly crash and burn.
