    Scanners

I did a search here for scanners regarding whether to TWAIN or not TWAIN and the newest of those threads was from 2012. I found a nice Fujitsu scanner that does not use TWAIN. When is this feature needed?
    Thank you very much-Dennis

What Fujitsu model? Sounds like the Scan Snap which is an excellent product.

Twain would involve more manual work and a certain knowledge. Also depends what type of applications you need a scanner.

Recommend you go to the Fujitsu website which has the various models.

Again, it depends on the type of applications and/or reasons you need a scanner.

      Thank you

      The model is iX500.
I was able to find a few videos online and from what little I learned, I think I might be OK to not worry about getting one without. My needs are pretty simple. I really only scan some documents and then save them to a desktop folder I've created, to later be viewed or printed.-Dennis

You will probably love the ScanSnap. Fujitsu is the workhorse of scanners.

          Fujitsu scanner

That is good to hear. I've got a friend that does court work and she has an older model that she loves. She suggested this one and it does look like it will be perfect.

Great decision for what you are doing. You get the FULL standard Adobe and other other features with your product. The Fujitsu tech support is free and US based and very knowledgeable and professional and extended hours.

Once you register the product you will receive their monthly newsletter.

We use both the Scan Snap and FI series products. The FI series has both Twain and a Scan Snap (non Twain) features and we leave the Twain feature to our Tech team for their work

Good luck and you will see a cost benefit/savings in time.

Thank you both very much for you help with this. I will order this unit today. I am looking forward to using this. I've been having issues with my Canon for long time and recently they have gotten worse.

Look for the file option to password protect your scanned document.

To mark twain or not to mark twain... Really, that is the question.

If you plan to use the scanner to populate data entry fields within your tax prep software, you may need a scanner which is Twain compliant. Check with your software provider.

BTW, Twain is an acronym for Technology Without An Interesting Name.

It is hard to dispute earlier posts re: Scan snap scanners. Especially since I have two of them.

                      Will you give an example?

Most software has a "Tax Import" feature that works with .pdf(s) whether created via Twain or non Twain. Bottom line the result requires proof reading.

                        Example of what?

Drake told us some years ago a "direct entry" scanner had to be TWAIN compliant.

From what other some other preparers have told us, their clients feel that scanning reporting forms while a time saver should be a cost (meaning fee) saver. We don't feel that way so we manually enter. Not necessarily correct for all tax pros, but works for us. It also forces us to look at the reporting form(s) for other things.....Another tax pro nearby mentioned during 2016 filing season (last year) their office had scanned some w-2's into wrong taxpayers folder (is that really possible?). Operator error I suspect.

Of course, if we had done that (scanner direct entry) from the beginning of this "tax season" we would not have missed three W-2 verification codes....wonder what mess that will create?

Got this today from Drake's web site:

Home»Browse»Drake Software»GruntWorx»12913: What Kind of Scanner to Use With GruntWorx
12913: What Kind of Scanner to Use With GruntWorx

What kind of scanner should I get to use with GruntWorx?

For GruntWorx products, select a scanner that is TWAIN compliant and capable of at least 300 Dpi resolution (minimum required), but preferably 600 Dpi.

A sheet feeder and duplex scanning capability are advised but not required.

Use a scanner that is comparable to one recommended by GruntWorx

                          ScanSnap

Just installed this scanner and I LOVE this! Lightning fast and this will save me a lot of time over my old scanner. I just rename the document(s) and then put it into any folder of my choosing. Wish I had purchased this in 2008 when I started going paperless.
                          Wonderful!
