    Driver's license verification required?

Are we required to enter into our software the clients Driver's license info this year? I know they say it is good idea to cut down on fraudulent returns, but majority of my clients I have had forever. Or is it a requirement if they are new clients?

I know last year it was optional and they were testing it. I don't *think it is a requirement but I wanted to make sure.

    Thanks.

Some states require it, so check with the states you file.

      Is IRS requiring it?

I just read something that says that "the national efile standards for the 2016 returns included a requirement for driver's license information. This was put in place by the E-standards group in response to the efforts of the states and IRS to detect and prevent fraudulent tax refunds." This did not come from IRS.

So I was wondering if IRS is actually requiring it?

No, the IRS is not requiring it. If it's entered it goes with the e-file data but there is not any rejects for not having it.
