I have this question asked by a couple of my SE Sch Filers regarding mileage.** SE travels to Staples store to purchase or just view*a business related item.** Within the same block the SE picks up their kid from school.* SE wants to know if they can claim all round trip mileage.* My answer has been, no only 50% of the round trip mileage.* Your thoughts.

Governing factor should be the purpose of the trip and/or extra mileage due to "business."
Assuming the facts given, i.e. picking up child from school, a good argument could be made for ZERO business miles. OTOH, if on same trip Staples was some distance away, the "extra" miles incurred might be a business deduction.

I agree.
Of course, deducting those "extra" miles would only be allowed if the taxpayer is coming from a business location (including the home if it is the "principal place of business").
