1099 other income

    Yes, she should be an employee. But the church is not the client, the pianist is. So now the preparer is struggling with how to report it. Because it's a 1099-MISC Box 7 for regular employment, it is gray.

    I'd explain Form 8919 (?) and let her decide since that probably means job loss or a strained working environment vs. Schedule C with SE. When I've had this situation, clients end up with C and SE.

    (I don't prepare the C-EZ. Same with 1040-A or -EZ. I like to have everything in it's usual place for easier proofreading. But, for something like this, I'd charge as if it were C-EZ.)

    I'd at least ask the pianist if she's spoken to her employer or would like me to speak to them or print out some information for her to present to them. If you're looking for a payroll client, treat this as a lead.

      See post 4-26-16: TY 2014 IRS says 1099-misc belongs on Sch C vs. Ln 21 form 1040. Anyone had experience with this before?
