    College Student 1099 Misc

Student is in med school and has 1099 MISC, Box 7 income of $860. Since student mainly lives on college loan monies and has no w2 income, does she have to pay SE taxes on this income?

Yes ... and she must file F-1040, along with Schedule C (or C-EZ) and Schedule SE to report the income and the SE tax. If the $860 is her only income, she will own no income tax ... just the SE tax, around $125.

what kind of work did she do to get this income? Was it continuous or a one-time thing? It may qualify for reporting on Ln 21 not subject to SE
Believe nothing you have not personally researched and verified.

I would suspect it is not subject to SE. Colleges are notorious for putting untaxed payments to students on a 1099-MISC. It must be a trade or business and be regular and continuous. I doubt the sutents work rose to that level. Take a look at Reg. 1.1402(c)
