Is it possible a trust was created/dated in 2012 for the child of the TP/childs father but not funded until TP/fathers death in early 2014? If so then 2014 maybe the first year this trust filed a tax return reporting cap gains & divs from a 1099-B issued to the childs trust?
It possible a trust was created 2 yrs ago but not funded until 2014?

Yes, it is possible. Perhaps the father's will had a pour-over clause dumping everything (or specified amounts) into the child's trust at his death. In that case, the first year any 1041 would require filing is the first year it had any income over the threshold or any distributions. -
