    Retiree Reimbursed for Medicare

When a retiree is reimbursed for his Medicare premiums by his ex employer is this a tax free event?

Unless there is an agreement between the former employer and retiree I would take the position it is a gift!

Could this have been part of his pension package?

I don't know the answer for sure, but if it is part of a Qualified Retirement Plan, Google says YES it is taxable starting in 2015.

Assuming it is done properly, the reimbursement is not included in gross income - see Q41 in ILM 200206053.

BTW, the questions are not in numerical order - you will need to scroll down to find it.

            12-27-15 good discussion

            This issue seems repeated.

See Post 12-27-15 "Medicare part b reimbursement" for additional info

              Some

Also you can reference IRS notice 2015-17 see page 6 - which states..... Rev. Rul. 61-146 holds that under certain conditions, if an employer reimburses an employee’s substantiated premiums for non-employer sponsored hospital and medical insurance, the payments are excluded from the employee’s gross income under Code § 106...

Some info from the 12-27-15 post mentioned
