Any ideas on bad financial situation

Client has tax bill of over $5,000 from last year. He had had major health situation develop during the last few months and is going back into hospital on Monday for further cancer surgery. He has had to leave workplace because he now shakes too badly to accomplish anything.

He called IRS wanting to make a payment plan of $25 per month, which they rejected, then put him on hold for one and a half hour, before disconnecting. $25 is actually more than he can afford. He is single with a son in college. Personal observation is that all son is concerned with is himself and will be of no help. Sadly, father would do anything son wants, if possible.

Outside of the usual OIC, larger payment plan, etc. - does anyone know of amnesty plans or anything that could benefit him?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Only in government or politics is a "cut in spending" really an increase. It's just not as much of an increase as they wanted it to be, therefore a "cut".

IRS isn't likely to accept anything less than $85/month for a standard payment arrangement, although he might be able to get them to go for $75/month. He certainly should not give up just because he got disconnected on a call. He should expect to spend some time on the phone getting this worked out. After all, how much of his time should he be willing to spend to deal with a $5K debt? I know he has lots of things to worry about with the upcoming surgery, but there is still time to get this resolved or at least delayed until after his surgery.

How about CNC (Currently Not Collectible) status?
I've seen people get that without the help/expense of a tax pro, once they knew what to ask for.
