How to find a non-profit's designation?

I am thinking about taking over Treasurer responsibilities of a local organization I am involved with. There are no documents on what type of organization it is (ie 501 3(c) ). I am told it is a non-profit that can not accept tax deductible contributions. The organization wants to apply to the IRS so that they can receive tax deductible contributions.

They have NEVER filed a 990 tax return or a postcard. I have an EIN from the bank and I have searched the IRS database of "exempt status revoked" but nothing comes up under that number.

I don't even know if the number matches the organization. This is a small town and YEARS ago, it could have been set up at the bank wrong. How can I find out what this EIN number I have is associated with?

    Thank you,

    Kerrie

    Exempt Organization

To check out any 990 filings within the past 3 years of an exempt organization
go to www.guidestar.org Also check with your State Attorney General's Office-
Charities Bureau, if the entity is required to file. Each State is different.

In order to apply for an exemption, for a 501(c)(3) Form 1023 is filed along with the
application fee and Form (I believe) 8718.

In order to apply for an exemption for any other 501(c) type entity Form 1024 is filed
along with the application fee and 8718.
