Electronic Filing Deadline? - 2011 Return

Had a person call today and was notified by IRS that his 2011 return has not been filed. They sent him a transcript. Simple return but wondering whether the return can be efiled at this late date?

Current and two prior If IRS system updated might allow more prior years. Your software company should know.

It's still current and two prior in processing year 2016. The IRS includes that information in Publication 4164 which has been updated for processing year 2016.

      https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p4164.pdf - 1.4.1 on page 17.

"In Processing Year 2016, MeF will accept TY2013, TY2014, and TY2015 returns for Form 1040."

Last time a 2011 form 1040 could be e-filed would have been November of 2014.

was the transcript for w2 and other income? If the return was never filed there would not be a return transcript.
Believe nothing you have not personally researched and verified.

Sounds like the IRS prepared a return for him based on information reported to them. Did he owe? No refund can be obtained at this late date, but if he can do a return and show he owes less or nothing at all, they may waive amounts due.
