As mentioned in another thread, we have a new client that is a campground. They previously did not accept credit cards but would like to do so. I keep seeing restaurants and other stores using an IPad, etc. to accept credit card payments but I do not know much about them. Not sure if that would be a good solution or if we are better doing something more traditional. Does anyone have a suggestion for my client?

You can swipe cards to pay a lower fee using an attachment to your smart phone, tablet, laptop, computer, etc. Or, have a free-standing swiper that connects directly to your processor. Or, you can enter data directly into your computer or any device without a swiper with a higher fee. Research what's available in your area as well as national firms. You can take credit cards via Intuit that imports the information directly into QuickBooks. Costco has low-cost options. Your bank may have an option. Ask other campgrounds or your trade association. You may get discounts via your association. Think about what you need. Mobility to go to each campsite, or a fixed location at your entrance? Seasonal?

If they do not... they will need to get one of those credit card machines... most banks offer them.

I use the Intuit version. It says "Quickbooks", but you don't need Quickbooks. I just log into the website on my computer.
You can manually type in the credit card information, but if you 'swipe' the credit card it is a cheaper rate (I bought mine on eBay). Starting this year, you may be required to have the special 'swiper' that can read the 'chip's in credit cards. If you use the old-fashioned magnetic 'swiper' with a credit card that has a 'chip', it will still work BUT if any fraudulent activity happens with the credit card YOU have have legal repercussions.
Both Quickbooks and Square have options to read it on your smartphone.

We have used the Square at our tax office for two tax seasons. It works unless the person's credit card is damaged from being bent in their wallet. We like it because it charges us per transaction, i.e. no monthly fee, and it was sent to us free when we signed up on the website. We set it up on several smart phones including our employees and they can't see our bank account information, only swipe the transaction. They just sent us new swipers to be able to read the chips and gave us information on how to use it.
