    Fraud Victim 1040 Processing

Client was a fraud victim by someone filing 1040 tax return using his SS#. As a result, client filed paper 1040 in April and is still waiting for refund. In general, how long should it take IRS to process these types of returns?

Two days! Only kidding. If you do a search of the posts, this issue or similar issue was addressed.

Recommend if not by end of August to do a follow up unless someone can recommend something different. Fraud issues are increasing according to the IRS (another post to search).

    Good luck.

One of my clients is still waiting for her refund. IRS told her not to expect anything until investigation is complete some time in Oct.

Just posted that one in which we submitted paperwork on 3/15/15, got refund last week of July. That was 4 1/2 months. I was expecting October, so we were happy.

The IRS says to allow 180 days to resolve, although more often than not, it doesn't take quite that long. It could also take longer. It is a good idea for the TP to call after about 3 months to see if there is additional info the IRS needs. Oftentimes the case sits in pending waiting for something from the TP, although they may forget to let the TP know they need the info. Sometimes it's a good idea to be a squeaky wheel. The Fraud Dept # is 1-800-908-4490, ext 245. Tell the client to figure on waiting at the very least a 1/2 hour to talk to anyone, and very likely the wait will be over an hour, even if they say the wait time is between 15 and 30 minutes (I believe that's part of the recording and has nothing to do with what's happening in real time).
