    surviving spouse electronic filing

Taxpayer passed away 2006. Can his spouse file electronically for 2005. I know you can file elf if he died during the tax year.

    Thanks

No one's answered, so I'll try from memory. Need pub. 1345 or whatever that number is that tells all about efiling, and I'm not at the office. Only if taxpayer died during tax year, then efile with surviving spouse signing. When taxpayer died in 2006, cannot efile 2005 return -- but mail it in with surviving spouse signing.

Can efile if died in 2006. Must use form 8453 instead of form 8879.

        EFile Return

Filing as surviving spouse or as surving relative relation the spouse can sign the 8879 ok.
As long as simple return involved and no estate.

Surviving spouse can file MFJ for 2005 and if there are dependents for 2006 and 2007. 2005 can still elf until Oct 15th.
If spouse has no dependents then 2006 is MFJ and subsequent years are Single. All can be elf'd taxea
