Filed a return for client and IRS changed the refund by $1K less. Is the normal thing to do is provide a letter of explanation. She got her reduced refund but no letter.

You can start by asking the taxpayer if they had a prior balance due, unpaid student loan etc.Taxes after all are the dues that we pay for the privileges of membership in an organized society. - FDR

Is the difference exactly $1,000? You might look to see if anything on the return matches that amount. Say for example there's $1,000 child tax credit and the IRS thinks the child is age 17. Of course if they e-filed that it would reject but it could be mailed in which case the IRS might adjust it when they process?
