    Income needed for adoption

I had a call from a person who wants to be a client. I will be meeting with him next week. He said they are in the process of adopting and need to prove that there income is above a certain level. Said the adoption agency needs a letter from a CPA verifying their income, and that their W-2 wages are just a little short. They bought a rental property last year and he thinks that will put him over. I told him that he should bring along copies of cancelled checks from tenant to prove income.

I've never run across this before, but is this request from the agency common? Any other ideas I should ask for to prove income?

You'll find lots of information on these sorts of letters primarily as requested by mortgage brokers. AICPA has some information on them here: http://www.aicpa.org/InterestAreas/F...ection3PV.aspx

    See .01 on their Q&A. http://www.aicpa.org/InterestAreas/F...rification.pdf
