    Phone scam

Story today in our local news (salem, ma.). Caller told a resident she owed $2k and that she would be arrested if she did not pay. As instructed, she purchased 4 $500 pre-paid cash cards, and furnished the numbers to the caller. When they called back, saying she owed $7k more, she went to the police. End of story. Sad tale...

That is very sad. Just yesterday a client called me saying he'd gotten a phone call and an email telling him it was the IRS and they were suing him.

      Dealing with scammers

I've received a couple of those telephone calls.

Let's just say my tenure on the TTB boards would be brief if I gave any specific details as to my response to the callers.

        Client just got a message . . .

from one of these scams. "We have tried to contact you 35 times by letter . . . ." Then goes on to say " . . . we are trying to give you a chance . . . "

Telephone number to call back was 703-552-8238. I told them NOT to call them back.
