Obtaining an EIN for an estate

Never done this before. Is the name and SS# the IRS ask for on their online app the name and SS# of the deceased?

    ein for estate

    1. Did you check the box on the web site that you are creating an estate? There is where you enter the information about the deceased (or ward).
    2. We can always apply by fax: Per the IRS Web Site: "Taxpayers can FAX the completed Form SS-4 (PDF) application to their state FAX number (see Where to File Your Taxes (for Form SS-4)), after ensuring that the Form SS-4 contains all of the required information. If it is determined that the entity needs a new EIN, one will be assigned using the appropriate procedures for the entity type. If the taxpayer's fax number is provided, a fax will be sent back with the EIN within four (4) business days."
Friends double; family triple. Don't buy an audit for yourself. If someone has to go to jail make sure it is the client. Remember it is only taxes, nothing important.

If you sign onto the EIN on-line application, the first screen says "Information About the Deceased" and, yes, you put the deceased's SSN here. You may be prompted to give the executor or administrator's SSN later.

How does the state get into this?

          1. The post included the "official" IRS instructions.
          2. The "state" reference is to the state where the estate is administered or located (might be different). One can fax the completed form (paper as opposed to on line) to the number provided on this IRS web site for the state where the estate is administered or located.
          3. Bascially, it is an RTFM issue.
