I have a client that I filed 2012 taxes for and was unaware of any 1099-C's issued. However, she was insolvent and it wouldn't have been taxable anyway. When we got a letter that they weren't shown as income, I filled out the 982 and sent it with that form. The IRS has sent another letter threatening to take her to tax court and showing is if the 982 was never sent. Thinking maybe I should do an amended return although all numbers are the same and attach a form 982 with it. Any advice? Maybe I should call? I hate to spend over an hour dealing with this, but will if I must. Thanks!
