I just confirmed why I should never bother to handle anything with the IRS via telephone.

You mean you actually did that? I would not dream of calling the IRS to try and resolve an initial issue or to ask a question. When you do, who do you think you're talking to??? The only time I ever call the IRS is to reach a specific person, such as an IRS agent involved in an ongoing audit or appeal.
