NY Property Taxes & Form 1040 Sch. A

My understanding is that in the State of New York property taxes on real estate are paid to local governments like counties, cities, and school districts. Are these county, city, and school taxes paid by a taxpayer during 2013 all deductible on Ln. 6 real estate taxes on Schedule A of a federal individual income tax return?

Absolutely! They are real estate taxes. A good resource for NY real estate taxes is www.taxlookup.net. Not all counties or school districts participate, but in my county most do and it comes in real handy when a client forgot receipts.

      Well --- not always.
You need to look at the bills.
There are some localities that bill for utility services, that are not considered real estate taxes.

One would hope the "taxes" were the only things being considered.

In NC, there are all kinds of "fees" that show up on the county "tax bills" (real property and personal property - mainly vehicles). A canceled check or credit card charge won't cut it for a deduction. . .I always ask to see the tax bill. Problems get compounded when the mortgage holder pays "taxes" from an escrow account and all you have is a Form 1098 annual statement.
