1099-R..."11 1st of design. Roth contrib.

Box 5 has $0, Box 7 has code 1 and IRA/SEP/SIMPLE box is checked. I have no idea when the TP started his Roth. My software tech support told me not to worry about entering anything into box 11 since my software did not generate any errors. HHHmmmm

Box 7 code 1 - are you sure that this is in fact a Roth IRA? You would expect an early distribution from a Roth IRA to be coded J. Could it be a traditional IRA?

As far as the 5 year period, I'm guessing the taxpayer is under age 59.5 based on code 1? If so, it doesn't really matter whether the 5-year period has been met. Unless there was a conversion made. It wouldn't be a qualified distribution regardless based on the age under 59.5.

For a Roth IRA you would determine how much is taxable on 8606 part III. You can withdraw your basis without it being taxable. Withdraw earnings and it is taxable. So you need to know what the taxpayer's basis in the Roth IRA is.

Yes TP is under 59 1/2 of age. Got to admit, never saw a 1099-R quite like this before. Looks like a traditional IRA except for the box 11 and box 5
