    Signing for Deceased Parent

Has anything changed? Daughter files for deceased mother so there's no e-file since daughter is not the spouse. Software puts "Deceased" across the top of the 1040 and 1040 address shows:

    Edna Smith - Decease 2/20/2013
    c/o Mary Smith
    123 Elm St.
    Rye, NY XXXXX

We can mail and she signs the return "Mary Smith for deceased mother" OR is it "Mary Smith for deceased mother Edna Smith". I think it's "Mary Smith for deceased mother"

If there is a refund coming, Form 1310 needs to be attached. See instructions.

If you mean a Form 56, it is not necessary.

E-file works fine with Form 1310 as needed

Daughter signs as personal rep. I don't know what F53 is. You probably mean Form 56, the use of which is generally optional.

            unable to file

We have not been able to get return for a deceased taxpayer and a refund to efile. don't know why. we gave up after 20 or 30 and just mail all of them now.
Correct signature is always the taxpayers name followed by the POA or personal rep.

              Sounds like a software issue.

If it were a problem with the IRS, it would e-file and be rejected. You may not have completed Form 1310 to the satisfaction of your software. Believe me, I e-file them all the time.

In the past years prior to 2013, I could always efile deceased taxpayer even with a Form 1310,

Seems like something new for 2013 Tax returns, as I have aJ an 2013 deceased taxpayer , which I efiled for 2012 and all went fine and accepted, but I could not file the 2013 final, had a reject code that says SSA blocked.
                It was code 901

I guess it is something new.

Here's the ATX comment on Error 901:

"If you indicated that the taxpayer or spouse was deceased and received this rejection, the return will have to be mailed to the IRS. The IRS has seen a few cases where this rejection was triggering erroneously even though the return was filled out properly."

The SSA had locked some SSNs of deceased taxpayers accidentally or due to their ID theft measures or whatever, but someone posted a week ago that the glitch has been fixed.

Efile. If you get a reject code, attach the opt out form with the code and mail. But, it sounds like efiles are going through now.

Using ATX also, when I tried to create the efile on such a case, it told me it cannot process and to mail the return.
