Benefits
Social Security Disability is not the same as SSI.
Social Security Disability benefits are based on the person's work record. Just like Social Security retirement benefits, these benefits are potentially taxable, depending on whether the person has other income, and how much. They will receive Form SSA-1099.
SSI is supplemental security income. This benefit is for people who are retired or disabled and do not get enough income from their retirement or disability benefits. Eligibility for SSI is based on the current income level of a person who is retired or disabled. It is not based on their lifetime work record.
SSI is not taxable, and the person will not receive Form SSA-1099.
Some people get both.
Disability and retirement benefits are based on the person's earnings history before they retired or became disabled. The person can never lose those benefits. They are earned. It is a government-sponsored pension plan, pure and simple.
SSI is a type of welfare. That's not a politically correct term, but it's accurate. SSI is for retired or disabled people who are poor.
A person could lose their SSI if they win the lottery or get a big inheritance. But they wouldn't lose their social security benefits.
SSI is like food stamps. For tax purposes, it doesn't exist.
