    Resident state

Taxpayer worked in New Jersey and lived in New York until 8-25-2013. And then he was relocated by his company and moved to California on 8-15-2013.

Is New York still his resident state in 2013 since he lived there majority of the time? If that's the case, for year 2103, he will have to file

    New York resident tax return.
New Jersey non-resident tax return (since he worked there).
    California part-year resident tax return.

    Any different opinions?

See http://www.tax.ny.gov/pit/file/pit_d....htm#part-year. A key question will be what happened to the NY home, and when.

Is the NJ employer the same? How long did he work there? Was it a temp assignment? Did employer withhold NJ taxes? Did he have CA income? It may be that he only has to file CA NR and NY resident or NR.
Believe nothing you have not personally researched and verified.

It was a permanent job and he had been filing the NJ tax return for years. So I guess he cannot escape from the NJ filing requirement. Thank you for raising this point though.

After reconsideration, those returns are also what I now think he should file. Thank you.
